Travel ethics

There’s no question that the kind of traveling I’ve done has broadened my understanding of the world, and motivated me to want to learn more and to help out with some of the realities I’ve encountered as best I can.

On the other hand, I think a lot of the traveling that gets done by those who can afford it is excessive. Especially airline flights for vacations. It all has an environmental impact, proportionate to the fossil fuel that is burned.

The typical sightseeing tours seem voyeuristic, and just scratch the surface of one place before moving on to another. We can appreciate the beauty of a place or local area more by spending time there and getting to know and love it. We don’t always need to visit new and different faraway places. We can make fewer, longer duration and shorter distance trips to reduce the impact and experience the beauty of a few places with more depth.

I don’t need to see every cool place in the world, or to try to see as many as I can, before I die.

While I still plan to keep my nomadic lifestyle, I think the time will come soon when I log considerably fewer travel miles.
